War in Chechnya

In the 1980s and early 2000s, Russia fought two devastating wars in the Caucasus republic of Chechnya. The capital, Grozny, was left in ruins. In 2004, Chechen separatists raided a school in the neighboring region of North Ossetia in one of the most brutal terrorist acts of the long conflict.
